SEPARATION 2

- Didn’t you say that this book is about separation?

- Yes, it deals with that moment.

- But, how is this connected to photography? What does photography have to do with separating?

- The question, for me, is about how to part ways or how to say goodbye properly.

- Separating from whom or from what? Do you mean to say, as Barthes does, that photography is itself a way of saying goodbye?

- Photography has its ways of welcoming and bidding farewell.

- Are you thinking of separation in a different sense?

- Yes and no. I am primarily thinking of the act of saying goodbye to photography itself.

- So, Barthes is not relevant here?

- Barthes is relevant. He is someone to whom I definitely want to say goodbye. But, what’s important is how to part ways comme il faut.

- What do you mean by “comme il faut”?

- I use the term in its literal sense, not in the customary formal sense of complying with etiquette, but rather in the sense of doing what needs to be done.

- Needs?

- An opportunity arises in the event of a separation, and the question is how one attends to and responds to that opportunity. I often think of this as acting with a precision within the moment—for example, when looking someone in the eye and saying (for the last time) “adieu” or just “see you later.”

- Are you thinking of this act as a work of art?

- No . . . well, sometimes . . .
