IMAGE STABILIZATION

Turn off the lens image stabilization. The newest, more expensive lenses allow this to be turned on while the camera is on a tripod. When stabilization is used for long exposure times, however, the motor can burn out and require costly repairs.

SELF-TIMER

If triggering the shutter by hand, use the self-timer so any camera shake will cease before the shutter opens. A 2-second delay works best, if the camera has this feature. If the camera only has a 10-second timer, opt for a cable release or wireless remote.
