Chapter 30 - Honor

Perry transmits in the clear. “They are preparing their guns on Diomede. Bring the rain.”

The rubble of the Alaskan wall comes alive with cannon fire. Bigger guns hidden in the wilderness bring down whistling death from twenty miles. There are many mines in Alaska, and some hide gigantic railroad guns.

They call them Hindemann’s Folly. It took Chris Hindemann’s father 20 years to construct ten 380mm railway guns and prepare 20 tunnels for staging sites 50 years ago. However, the Russians are not laughing as Hindemann’s Folly rains down 1,800-pound high explosive shells on Diomede. It was tempting to use them earlier, but they are too vulnerable to air strikes. The gun crews are eager to contribute distant destruction on the enemy.

But the Russian Navy skims along the edges of the ice bridge to deliver scathing fire on Alliance guns in the wall. The naval guns soon focus full attention on the distant railroad guns. Hindemann pulls them back into the mines as tens of thousands of Russian infantry begin the 15-mile dash to the Alaskan coast. Danilov gets a close-up view of this logistical marvel from the bridge of the Minsk.

Danilov knows about pride, but honor is an alien concept. He watches as the battleships fire inland. He hears shouts of joy from ground forces at the success of their crossing. They take pride in their victory, but is there honor?

He clears his mind of distractions as his heart thumps hard in his chest. Is that from adrenaline, or from a deeper motivation? Is this what honor feels like? He orders his 8-inch guns to fire on pre-selected targets.

High velocity shells rip into the superstructure of the two Russian warships. These ships provide suppressing fire for the forces pouring towards the wide entry carved by atlantium excavators during the initial invasion. Danilov smiles as he imagines the confusion aboard those ships and orders his guns to sustain fire.

Danilov turns broadside to bring all eight guns to bear. He feels satisfaction as he watches his shells smash into the targets, but the damage is insufficient. He watches with grim determination as their heavy turrets slew 18-inch guns towards the Minsk with menacing precision. He is no match for one, much less two of these heavy battleships.

“Now,” Danilov orders.

The atlantium machine swings into view above deck and slices through one ship and then the other. Neither ship fires before sliding under the frigid sea. Muted secondary explosions throw geysers hundreds of feet into the air long after the vessels sink.

“Destroy the ice bridge,” Danilov shouts. “Don’t fire on men and equipment. Our assignment is to destroy that bridge.”

Hindemann’s guns emerge from the mines and fire. Dreger spots with the astronomy binoculars upgraded with a shielded ranging device. Hindemann’s guns are on target with the first volley

Hindemann’s Folly devotes full attention on those unfortunate mobs on the ice bridge as Danilov slices the ice with the atlantium machine. The Russians cannot retreat as the ice breaks away in enormous chunks that tip and overturn.
