The next time she woke, Eve looked around her, making sure the things she saw matched up with the last time she was lucid in the makeshift hospital room. She didn’t trust herself not to concoct a dream that matched reality so closely that she could kill a real person.

She tested out her pain levels, feeling the limits of her movements before committing them to memory so that she didn’t overreach and injure herself. She stood, stretching slowly as far as she could allow herself, and walked out of the room in search of something she hadn’t thought of for days: food.

Her stomach, instead of feeling ready to void the bile it held, grumbled in protest at not being given any work to do. Walking out into the main room, she stopped, her eyes locking with Hegarty’s and recognising the fear in them. She held up her hands in front of her, wincing and leaning down slightly to her left.

“I’m sorry,” she said, her voice weak and raspy courtesy of her bone-dry throat. “I… I…”

“You were hallucinating,” Hegarty said, relaxing. “Understandable, given the circumstances.”

“What circumstances?”

“Hard to say without tests, but my best guess is that you have an increased sensitivity to opiates.” He watched her blank stare until it sunk in that he was talking a different language to her.

“Because your injuries were so bad and the pain was unbearable, I gave you an opiate drug called morphine. It appears your body is highly sensitive to it, and addiction can happen in a very short timeframe if—”

“Addiction?”

“Yes, it’s naturally a very…” he paused, seeing that she wasn’t in the mood for a complex medical description. “It makes your body crave more, but it can kill you if you have too much. I wasn’t… I wasn’t poisoning you, I was trying to help you.”

“I know. I’m sorry I…” she trailed off as she mimed choking herself.

“Don’t worry,” Hegarty said, appearing distinctly uncomfortable for a moment. “I imagine you’re rather thirsty?”

“And hungry,” Eve admitted.

“Well, if you can refrain from attempting to break my neck, I’ll sort something out for you.”
