UNDERSTANDING THE TYPES OF VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT

Broadly speaking, there are five different types of volunteer engagement:

Formal: Here, volunteers are scheduled into what is typically ongoing ‘work.’ Depending on the nature of what the volunteers have committed to do, they may receive training beforehand (for example, in a hospital setting, or for front-of-house volunteers in a theater) and they may also be supervised.

Informal: Individually driven, this sort of volunteer work usually happens outside of an organizational context. It’s basically about good old helping, but it might involve beneficiaries that are not known personally to the volunteer (for example, in the case of neighbors who organize a meal-delivery service for a crossing guard who’s fallen ill).
