Carlos lowered his raised hands and stepped forward, away from the scanner. The blue light was still flashing. Alex held his breath. This was it. They’d been found out. First his friend would be searched and apprehended, and then they would come for him. But, as he watched, he saw Carlos walk confidently away.

Meanwhile, Harley was surrounded by armed security personnel and forced to the ground, his hands behind his head.

‘I switched it!’ Carlos whispered. ‘Come on … before he realizes what’s going on.’

Behind them, Alex caught sight of the wakizashi as it was taken from Harley’s body armor. Harley would know who that belonged to. It wouldn’t take them long to figure out what had happened.

‘How did you do that? I was standing right by you and I didn’t see that going on.’

‘When you learn to handle one of those things correctly, you pick up other tricks along the way. It’s all about focus, mind and dexterity. And that idiot Harley was so busy mouthing off that he made it easy. He thought I was patting him on the back to congratulate him. We’re inside Fortrillium, Alex. I can’t believe it!’

‘I wish I could speak to Mum. She was hurt, I’m worried about her.’

‘Susan will be fine,’ Carlos reassured him. ‘You saw her talking – she isn’t badly hurt, just her arm. And you need to trust her, Alex. She’s a highly trained cop, the best in her field.’

Alex wasn’t so sure. Things were getting out of control. The path ahead was filled with hazards, and he was terrified by the brutality that he’d seen that day. It was why Fortrillium had succeeded in grabbing so much power and so soon. Each little bite could be brushed aside … but soon the irritation became a festering wound that needed to be lanced.

They walked rapidly along the grey, featureless corridor.

‘This place is huge!’ Carlos said. ‘And once they colonize the remainder of City Park, it’ll be even bigger.’

Alex waited for two women in white coats to pass by before he spoke.

‘Why do they need something this size?’

‘Officially, it’s for governance. But you’re right. There’s much more going on behind the scenes.’

‘I can’t believe it. It wasn’t that long ago that no one had heard of Fortrillium, and we were going about our everyday lives.’

‘If you ask me, it’s a power grab. They’re creating a police state. The President has little or no control over what’s happening. In theory, the constitutional power is his, but you’ve seen what they’re like. Do you still think Fortrillium represents the interests of the people?’

Alex was finding it impossible to absorb everything that had happened to him since he’d got up that morning. He didn’t answer Carlos, but instead stopped dead.

‘We’re walking aimlessly. We need a plan.’

‘We came to find Audra, right? Well, let’s do that. We’d better take these helmets off – nobody is wearing them inside the building. This area looks like a medical facility. Audra was in a hospital gown of some sort when she recorded that video.
