“Follow me, morons, I know a way out,” Kim says.

We shoot off after her. I’m not getting any whispers, which is odd. Most of the time I get some kind of hum—I suppose how tinnitus must be—but in these clinical corridors I’m getting nothing, just a little background crackle. If I’m honest, it’s a bit of a relief. God, what if I’m mistaking this for actual tinnitus? Could it be mixed in with everything, and I didn’t notice it? I’ve got to remember to ask my doctor about it, and my ulcer, and my shoulder.

We run down a corridor, and I think we’re close to the Roswell room. I could never forgive myself if I didn’t ask. “Tesla, you were in a room when you were first brought here with some…interesting material?”

“Oh, the stuff from the crash site you mean?”

I wasn’t expecting that. Oh, my God, could this be what me, Marv, and thousands of others have been searching for all these years? “They told you?”

“They described it as an advanced aerial vehicle. I was not entirely convinced of their honesty.”

“Oh, that’s what they told you, did they? Never mind. We have some friends who’d be interested in…seeing the material, but we weren’t able to—”

“Yes, they’ve set up a limiter, which is a fascinating development in itself. It forms a connection with an item, and you can set a distance for how far that item can be taken away from the limiter. It starts with a small electric shock, which gets bigger the farther you take it away from the limiter, and then it begins a pull like a chick being taken away from the mother bird. Such wonders!”

We swerve around corners at an alarming rate. How big is this place anyway? We’re coming up to the Roswell room.

“Do you know how to deactivate the limiter?”

“Oh, yes, it’s pretty simple.”

I take hold of Tesla’s hand and start to pull him towards the room. Marshall is so intent on listening to Kim that they turn a corner and are gone. It’s not going to hurt to go in and get the foil. It’ll take five minutes. It’s the Holy Grail, actual physical proof of the crash. This will change the world! I nudge the door with my foot and drag Tesla into the room. The digital whiteboard is now showing pictures of the Phoenix Lights with the rather ominous message of: “INVASION IMMINENT”.

“Do you know what that means?”

“Oh, it’s some kind of test.” Tesla is already feeling his fingers around the underside of the desk. He’s frowning. “It should be here somewhere.”

I look up at the security camera and realize too late that the light on it is green.

“We’ve got to go.”

But the door has already begun to open.
