I hate to have to even write this to you, my dear, as I know you’re off on your great romantic adventure right now. I’m writing this four days after you left the mill, so you’re probably just arriving in Norwich now.

I’ll get the hard news out of the way now, and then I’ll try to explain everything the best I can. Your sister, Elizabeth, has passed away.

I’m so sorry to break this news to you, especially now when you have so much excitement going on.

Your other sister, Emma, I believe, came to the mill this morning looking for you. She was directed to come to see me, and when I explained that you had gone, she told me what had happened and hoped I could get in touch with you.

It seems Elizabeth had been fighting with illnesses for the past two years and this last time, she just wasn’t able to recover from it.

I’ve enclosed your sister’s address, so that if you want to write to her, you can. She seemed to think you wouldn’t know where she lived and that she didn’t expect you to write, but I know you’d want to.

Emma told me that she just came to let you know because you’d done so much for them when they were small, and she thought you’d want to know.

Once again, I am so sorry for your loss and I’m sending you my deepest condolences.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to write to me and I’ll do my best to get a letter back to you right away.

I hope you’re settling well in your new home and that Mr. Hoff is treating you like the angel you are.
