This is different from more traditional transformational leadership theories that tend to focus on improving processes within the organization as a way to maximize success. Transformational leadership does not take into account our societal injustices, such as of racism. As students and staff walk through the doors of our schools, they are not washed of their social experiences. They bring these experiences to school, which needs to be taken into account in order to maximize learning. Everyone does not learn the same because we have different life experiences. Shields (2010) writes,

The major divergence between transformational and transformative leadership is the former (transformational) focuses primarily on what happens within the organization whereas the latter (transformative) starts with a recognition of some material realities of the broader social and political sphere, recognizing that the inequities and struggles experienced in the wider society affect one’s ability both to perform and to succeed with an organizational context.
