Atarax

Once I started to sleep better but still felt anxious now and again, I asked my gynecologist if she could suggest something that helped with anxiety and made my body relax. For even if I could sleep, my body sometimes felt tense as though I was unable to wind down. Have you ever felt like that?

I made it clear that I wanted to avoid anti-depressants, sleeping pills, and anxiety suppressants. I asked for an alternative that you could not become addicted to but could just take now and then. She suggested I try Atarax. Even though, overall, I am very dubious about using medication if it can be avoided, I would like to tell you about how Atarax worked for me and why I tried it at all.

Atarax is a medicine given, for example, to small children to ease the itching of chicken pox. It blocks histamine, a substance that can sometimes cause allergic reactions in certain cells. Atarax has also shown to work against anxiety and worry since it makes your muscles relax but has no proven effect on sleeping problems. It’s also not addictive.

To me, Atarax is so relaxing that I fall asleep. I take the smallest dose, 10mg, and for me that’s enough. I have taken it when I have felt uneasy and worried and sometimes if I have slept badly for a two nights in a row. On the third night, I can take an Atarax to finally get a good night’s sleep. When things were at their worst for me, having melatonin and Atarax was a great comfort.
