Heart in her throat, Everly stepped away before the man could turn to disarm her.
âSawyer...â She could barely croak out the words. She dropped the gun to her side. âIâm sorry. I had to be sure it was you.â
God, what am I doing?
What should be a simple protection detail was getting out of control.
Breathing hard, Sawyer faced her. Though she kept the flashlight pointed down, it provided enough light so she could see he was dripping wet. That shouldnât surprise her, but he had to be freezing.
She grabbed a throw blanket from the sofa and tossed it over him.
âLayla?â
âHere.â She stepped out of the shadows. âI was still hiding in the tub, but I heard it was you.â
âWhat happened?â
âI lost them, thatâs what. They got away.â
âNot before I shot one of them in the leg.â
âTheyâll be heading to a hospital. To the ER. He was bleeding badly,â Sawyer said. âDid you call 911?â
âYes. But I have bad news. Help has to come from the other side of the island because the road is flooded, so they have to take the long way around.â
âIf the road out of here is flooded, then...â He pressed a fist to his lips and paced. âThen those men who broke into the house canât get out either. That means they have to come back this direction.â
Sawyerâs expression said it all: he didnât like the idea. They could try something againâor one of them could, if the other got the bleeding under control. They could know the police would take too long, and they could try again.
âWhatever happens to those men, Sawyer, we canât stay here. The powerâs out. The alarm system is down. Maybe it was the storm, or maybe those men did something. But it doesnât matter. We canât stay.â
His dark look spoke volumes. âI agree.â
And for once, they could see eye to eyeâbut it had come at a high price. âIâve already arranged for a safe house,â she said. âGather what you need, and weâre getting out of here.â
Everly pulled Layla to her in a big hug, and the girl wrapped her arms around her. Warmth flooded her. She didnât usually become so attached to clients, but this was different. Her client was a young girl who needed more than a bodyguard with a gunâshe needed emotional support. And apparently, Layla had bonded with Everly.
Sawyer hadnât missed the exchange, and he held Everlyâs gaze for so long, she wanted to question him about what he was thinking. He seemed to be searching the deepest parts of her.
Again.
âYou heard her, Layla,â he said. âGrab one small bag. We need to move, and fast.â
âIâll go with you,â Everly said.
âNo, thatâs okay,â she said. âI got it.â
âFor your protection.â
Layla frowned, but Everly followed her down the dark hallway, guiding them with her flashlight. She kept her gun close.
In the bedroom, Everly shone the flashlight around. âThere. I see a small backpack in the closet.â
Everly started for it, but Layla beat her to it. She snatched the backpack up.
