* * *

Heart in her throat, Everly stepped away before the man could turn to disarm her.

“Sawyer...” She could barely croak out the words. She dropped the gun to her side. “I’m sorry. I had to be sure it was you.”

God, what am I doing?

What should be a simple protection detail was getting out of control.

Breathing hard, Sawyer faced her. Though she kept the flashlight pointed down, it provided enough light so she could see he was dripping wet. That shouldn’t surprise her, but he had to be freezing.

She grabbed a throw blanket from the sofa and tossed it over him.

“Layla?”

“Here.” She stepped out of the shadows. “I was still hiding in the tub, but I heard it was you.”

“What happened?”

“I lost them, that’s what. They got away.”

“Not before I shot one of them in the leg.”

“They’ll be heading to a hospital. To the ER. He was bleeding badly,” Sawyer said. “Did you call 911?”

“Yes. But I have bad news. Help has to come from the other side of the island because the road is flooded, so they have to take the long way around.”

“If the road out of here is flooded, then...” He pressed a fist to his lips and paced. “Then those men who broke into the house can’t get out either. That means they have to come back this direction.”

Sawyer’s expression said it all: he didn’t like the idea. They could try something again—or one of them could, if the other got the bleeding under control. They could know the police would take too long, and they could try again.

“Whatever happens to those men, Sawyer, we can’t stay here. The power’s out. The alarm system is down. Maybe it was the storm, or maybe those men did something. But it doesn’t matter. We can’t stay.”

His dark look spoke volumes. “I agree.”

And for once, they could see eye to eye—but it had come at a high price. “I’ve already arranged for a safe house,” she said. “Gather what you need, and we’re getting out of here.”

Everly pulled Layla to her in a big hug, and the girl wrapped her arms around her. Warmth flooded her. She didn’t usually become so attached to clients, but this was different. Her client was a young girl who needed more than a bodyguard with a gun—she needed emotional support. And apparently, Layla had bonded with Everly.

Sawyer hadn’t missed the exchange, and he held Everly’s gaze for so long, she wanted to question him about what he was thinking. He seemed to be searching the deepest parts of her.

Again.

“You heard her, Layla,” he said. “Grab one small bag. We need to move, and fast.”

“I’ll go with you,” Everly said.

“No, that’s okay,” she said. “I got it.”

“For your protection.”

Layla frowned, but Everly followed her down the dark hallway, guiding them with her flashlight. She kept her gun close.

In the bedroom, Everly shone the flashlight around. “There. I see a small backpack in the closet.”

Everly started for it, but Layla beat her to it. She snatched the backpack up.
