Chapter 10
But I donât want to stay in bed any more,â Lillie announced to Daniel. âIf I let you get up, youâll just run around and tear open those stitches. Be patient, and Iâll take the stitches out in another few days.â
âIf the stitches are coming out in a few days anyway, why canât I get up?â Lillie demanded.
âBecause Iâm the doctor and I said no.â With that Daniel left the room, passing Garrett in the doorway as he left.
âSheâs not to get out of that bed, and if she tells you otherwise, sheâs lying,â Daniel told Garrett.
Garrett laughed. âIs she being that bad?â
âWorse. I wouldnât go in there unless youâre prepared for a battle. Boredom has made her mean.â
Garrett glanced past Daniel, where Lillie sat with an indignant look on her face. âI see what you mean. Iâll be careful.â Daniel shrugged his shoulders and walked down the hall.
âHow are you feeling, Lillie?â Garrett questioned as he took a seat in the chair beside Lillieâs bed.
âIâm tired of being in this bed,â Lillie answered. âDaniel still wonât let me get up. It isnât fair.â
âLifeâs not fair, Lillie. Nobody promised it would be. Jesus said weâd have trials and tribulation,â Garrett said, trying hard to find a way to talk to Lillie about God. Maggieâs concerns for her best friend had quickly become Garrettâs concerns as well.
âThen why try?â Lillie asked.
âWhatâs the alternative? We can give up and spend our time in misery and discomfort, but thatâs not what God has in mind.â
âHow do you know? Maybe God doesnât like us or maybe Heâs mad because weâve done something we shouldnât. Churches are always telling us what sinners we are,â Lillie said.
âWe are sinners,â Garrett began. âThat much is true. But God gave us a way to be forgiven. Jesus came to this earth and died for those sins.â
âSurely He died for his friends and family, or for the people of his time. I canât believe He died for those who hadnât been born.â
âBut thatâs whatâs so special about it, Lillie. He did die for you. A long time ago, Jesus looked down through history and saw you and me, Maggie, Daniel, and everyone else, and He knew we couldnât make it alone.â
âBut I feel alone,â Lillie admitted sadly.
âI know you do, Lillie. Thatâs because you donât have Jesus. None of us ever belongs until we repent of our sins and belong to Him. None of us heals until we let Him take control of our wounds.â
âHow can you be sure God cares? How can you know whether Heâs listening to you or not?â Lillie questioned.
Garrett smiled knowingly. What Christian hadnât asked these same questions? Of course there were those fortunate few who found faith and trust in God an easy thing.
âItâs a matter of faith, Lillie. When you finally come to terms with the truth about Jesus Christ, nothing else matters. The pain, the fears, the denialânone of it matters anymore. It all falls away like the Scripture says. The old is passed away, and we become new creatures in Christ.
