Chapter Sixteen
Will had just pulled onto the highway when his cell phone rang. He wrestled it free from his suit pants. Glancing down, he didnât recognize the number on the screen.
âWill Albright,â he answered.
âItâs me.â
âRebecca? Donât tell me you missed your flight?â
âActually, I just landed.â
âYouâre already here?â
âI took an earlier flight.â
âWhere are you?â
âIâm in a taxi. The driver let me borrow her cell.â
âWhereâs your phone?â
âAt my fatherâs. I was in such a hurry when I leftââ
Will noted a distressing tone in his wifeâs voice. âAre you okay?â
âI donât want to talk about it. Iâm tired and ready to be home. Iâll see you in a few.â
It was after seven when the security box at the main gate sent out an alert. Will buzzed the car in and jogged outside to greet her. Theyâd talked only sporadically over the last week, and with each conversation, he knew that his wife was growing wearier. It was the most consecutive days sheâd spent with her parents in recent years. What started as good-natured ribbing had at times turned ugly between Leland and Rosalie, leaving Rebecca uncomfortably in the middle of a decades-long feud.
The few minutes they did talk were filled with more of the same safe, empty words that defined the bulk of recent communication between them: book talk, corporate restructuring, movie deals, and blueprints. The tiny growth that developed in their time together had all but withered away, making Will question what, if any, reconnection had truly been made during their brief reunion in Atlanta. He made a firm decision on the way home to do everything possible to reignite that flame that once burned bright between them. With a little help from Georgia, he hoped that maybe they could find their way back to one another.
She hadnât even exited the car and already he could see dark circles under her eyes. He opened the door, handed the driver a wad of cash, and then helped her out. Georgia appeared and retrieved the bags from the trunk, leaving them on the bottom stair as she shuffled back to the kitchen. With his arm around her shoulder, Will led Rebecca inside.
âGeorgia made your favorite stuffed pork tenderloin. I havenât sampled it yet, but it smells delicious.â
âThanks, but Iâm not very hungry,â she answered.
âI stopped by that little bakery and picked up some tiramisu for you. Surely you wonât pass on that.â
âMaybe later.â
âBut itâs tradition.â
âNot right now.â
âIs there anything I can get for you?â he asked.
âAll I want is to take a shower and go to bed.â
âSounds good to me.â He nuzzled her neck as both arms encircled her waist.
âWill, please.â She wrestled free from his grip, clearly conveying her desire to be left alone.
Rebecca collected her garment bag and small carry-on, then headed upstairs. Will picked up the large suitcase and followed her, guessing that further interaction would have to wait until morning. Behind their bedroom door, she wasted no time and went straight to the shower. He wanted to slip into the
