Chapter 8

Pennie looked at me and wanted some action. I could tell from the way she was staring at me. I could tell she was eager to grind her hips against mine, and I wanted it too, but we were still working on her framework, and my father was standing on the other side of the table from me. How was I supposed to work like this, let alone think straight?

My father was back in my life and had a few new tricks up his sleeve to make survival in the Hovel Slums a little more bearable. Things were looking up, and I could feel myself actually becoming happier. I even laughed with them as we talked about our lives. I hadn’t laughed in years, and it felt so strange and euphoric.

The night hours washed over us as my father and I continued to improve and upgrade Pennie’s hardware with everything that he had scrapped over the last few years. He was an expert at knowing what to find and what to do with it, so it was the perfect set of elements to increase her power.

“I am not saying it will be easier to attack Slane in the company of his great army of ‘Borgs, but it might be a lot more fun for you, now that we have you all couped up. You should feel a lot more powerful now, Pennie.” My father had that fresh spark in his eyes, the way he used to look when he made a new discovery or solved a complex riddle.

“Shall I test it out now?” she asked, sitting up from the table we had her lying on.

“Not just yet, dear. We need to keep quieter and still in the night hours, so we don’t draw any attention to ourselves. In fact, we will need to put these lights out soon, so we don’t attract anyone looking for some trouble tonight.”

He was right. A lamp in the dark in the empty ruin of a fallen city was a beacon to attract anything, like a moth to a flame. We extinguished the lantern, powered by my father’s genius, and the only light source we had were the edges of moonlight that came through the cracks. What we had now was the most sophisticated and powerful fighting machine in all of Droldark. No one alive in the Colonies had the tech or enhancements that she now had, and she was prepared to fight to death in order to eliminate the cruel Lord and slave owner, Bozzik Slane. And, it wasn’t just him she had to tackle—she had to take down his whole army of cronies, willing to put up a fight to protect the world that their Boz created for them.

Another night lived here in Colony 1 and in the house I once knew as a child. It felt so strange to see it again and to feel my father’s hand on my shoulder, warming me up to the life I used to know, and giving me something more to fight for.
