CHAPTER

TWENTY-SEVEN

The brutes shoved me inside the one door that was open. The room was all white and as still as the hall. A single metal chair sat in the middle, bolted down to the deck. The only other fixture was a baseball sized spherical drone hovering in one corner. It emanated a low pulse that tickled my eardrums. No recording devices were going to work in here. Not vids or audio.

I shivered as I looked around. I’d been doing a decent job of controlling my panic thus far, not wanting Garner to smell my fear like the dog that he was, but now, I couldn’t help it. I’d seen rooms like this in the vids. Some Galactic rep or bounty hunter bashing someone about like a piñata while screaming at them for answers.

A low menacing chuckle came from Garner. He must’ve seen me shiver or noticed the color drain from my face. I simply couldn’t control it. Nothing good ever happened within these soundproofed walls.

“Not so tough now, are you?” Garner snarked, pointing with his shock-rod to the lone chair in the middle of the room.

Without a word, the oaf holding me obliged and shoved me into it. He unclamped the magna-cuffs long enough to yank my arms around and secure both to the back of the chair. Then he clamped my ankles. My muscle automatically tensed against all the restraints, but that was as pointless as trying to pull a starship. I wasn’t going anywhere.

Garner sauntered to stand in front of me with deliberate slow footsteps which echoed around the creepy room. He was still diddling that shock-rod, and it popped occasionally with a spark.

A metallic bang caused me to startle and whirl my head towards the source. I swallowed hard at the sight. The door had shut, and we were all now sealed within; me, bolted down to a chair, Garner, and two brutes. Baring my teeth, I jerked against the restraint and wriggled, trying to break free, but nothing budged. By now I’d given up on feigning composure and my chest heaved. They could do anything to me they wanted in here, and Leeges went missing all the time.

“Oh, look how the tables have turned.”

Garner’s voice prompted me to glance back in his direction, but right as I looked his way, a hard blow clipt across my cheek. Garner had struck me with the shock-rod.

I yelped as my head whipped to the side from the force, and blood flew from my mouth to speckle the floor. Taking a few steadying inhales, I forced a smirk, even as my mouth filled with blood.

Grinning with my reddened teeth, I met Garner’s gaze. “Too chickenshit to face me in a fair fight, huh? How ‘bout you uncuff me and we settle this like men?”

Garner merely chuckled, taking a moment to study the red now dotting the pristine white of the floor, then looked back to me. I held his gaze for a beat, then harked a huge wad of bloody spit in his direction.
