Chapter 14: Ellie

“Conrad and I are now courting,” Ellie said as she helped Margaret get the things on her list.

“Oh? Are you sure that is wise?”

“Pastor Buchanan has no objections to it.”

Margaret searched Ellie’s face. “You spoke to him about it?”

Ellie nodded. “Conrad did as well.”

“Hm. And you are sure he showed no signs of distress when you talked to him?”

Ellie’s eyebrows furrowed. “I wasn’t looking. Why would he?”

“My dear girl, Paul Buchanan, despite knowing he shouldn’t, is madly in love with you.”

“He couldn’t be.”

“Oh, but he is.”

“Did he tell you so?”

“No, but I have seen the way he looks at you. I know you have already said yes to Conrad, but I suggest you take things slow with him. I haven’t interacted with him much, but I have a feeling he might be good at acting one way for a while but then change later on. Be careful and cautious.”

“I usually am,” Ellie said. “Now back to Pastor Buchanan. If he is in love with me, why would he agree to be my friend during this courtship and help me with whatever I need?”

Margaret smiled. “Dear girl, he would agree to it precisely because he is in love with you. He wants what is best for you even if it hurts him deeply. He also probably believes it is the right thing to do since Conrad is his cousin and he himself cannot marry you until you become a Christian. I just wish he had waited.” The last sentence was muttered almost under her breath and Ellie almost didn’t catch it.

“Why do you wish he had waited?”

“Hm? Oh, I... Well, I think you are more open to Christianity than you think you are.”

Ellie stiffened. “I am not. Let’s add up your totals so you can be on your way.”

“I’m sorry if I offended you.”

“You didn’t. I just don’t want anything to do with Christianity and never will.”

“Mm-hmm. Well, we’ll see what God does with that challenge.”

Ellie finished adding up the total. “What do you mean?”

“God loves a good challenge, especially softening the hardest of hearts. It’s just possible He will find a way to soften yours.”

“Unlikely. Here is your change. Have a good day.”

“God bless,” Margaret said as she left with her packages.

Ellie leaned on the counter. Could Pastor really be in love with her? No. It was nonsense to think so. She shook the cobwebs from her head and went around the counter to make sure everything was straightened up.
