âThatâs wâwonderful. Congratulations.â Popcorn rained onto the couch and tumbled to the floor.
âThank you. Itâs crazy. Me, Miss Independent, giving up my career for a man. But Lindy was a full-time homemaker, and she set the bar high. She always had supper on the table exactly at six, and she ironed his shirts and even did the yard work. If thatâs what Steven wants in a wife, thatâs what heâll get. Itâs a small price to pay, donât you think?â
Jeanieâs mouth parted. Her lips wouldnât cooperate. âWhâwhen are you getting married?â
The giggle rattled her eardrum. âWe donât have a date set yetâyou know how Steven is. . . .â
Evidently I donât have a clue. âUh-huh.â
âBut Iâd love you to make our cake.â
Eyes focused on nothing, Jeanie nodded.
âJeanie?â
âOh. . .yes, of course. Iâd be. . .honored.â
Gretchen made a funny little gasp that Jeanie couldnât decipher. âJeanie?â
Please, please donât ask if Iâm okay with this. âYes?â
âAre you okay with this?â
Lord, forgive me, Iâm about to lie. She sucked in a ragged breath. âOf course! Yes, of course. Congratulations.â
âThank you. I just donât want anything straining our friendship.â She gave a tittery laugh. âAfter all, Iâm going to be your daughterâs stepmother.â
The popcorn bag let out a whoosh as Jeanie crushed it into the couch cushion. Lifting it, she crunched it again before firing it at the TV. It dropped to the floor, leaving behind a greasy mark on the screen. Jeanie looked down at the matching stain on the cushion. âGretchen, my mother just got home.â From taking the trash to the curb. The statement was irrelevant, but at least it was true. âCongratulations again. Bye.â
âOkay, bye. See you on Wednesday.â
Not a chance. Iâm going to be so sick by Wednesday.

â. . .and how would you feel about green and gold for our colors?â
Steven switched the phone to his other hand, rubbed his sore earlobe, and took a glass out of the cupboard. He knew heâd be in trouble if he said âfeelâ and âcolorâ didnât belong in the same sentence. âI donât think that would go over so well up here. How about blue and orange instead?â
âSteven. . .â Was that a gag on the other end?
He couldnât resist pushing it. âLetâs reconsider. If we get married in Dallas we can do blue and silver.â
âOh. . .I get it, silly. We are absolutely not doing football colors.â
âThatâs what people will think.â He poured a glass of grape juice. âI know a few Bears fans whoâll boycott the wedding if we do green and gold.â
âSteven. . .â His name stretched out on an exhale. âThere are a lot of shades of green and gold that wonât make anyone think of the Green Bay Packers. Youâll see. We are talking fall, right? October, maybe?â
âSure.â He opened cupboards, searching for something to sustain him until he could fix a real dinner. Gretchen had called at ten minutes to five. It was now five to six and Burt would be here any minute. On the bright side, she was speeding his weight loss.
