English expat Rose Carrarini and her French husband Jean-Charles opened this Anglo-French tearoom in 2002. Its rapid and runaway success – there’s been two Rose Bakery cookbooks and there are now offshoot cafés in the Marais, New York, London, Tokyo and Seoul – created something of a trend in big healthy salads and heaped vegetable quiches. Carrarini has also turned Parisians onto earthy, homey Anglo baking: carrot cake, brownies and citrus-scented pound loaves have become staples on her menus. This original café, with its expressionist murals, schoolroom chairs and overflowing displays, remains the warm and happily chaotic place it always has been (and, charmingly, you might spot Rose herself – she lives nearby and can often still be found in the tearoom’s kitchen).
