CHAPTER 17
PARALYSIS | GROUND-ZERO +32 DAYS
THE CONVICTS, CROYDON
It was later than planned when they left the café. Keelan’s mood was foul after discovering the dead woman. He felt cheated. The boy had shuffled himself so he was behind his mother’s body, oblivious to the blood, the dark patches visible on the tiled floor in what little light passed through the opaque plastic sheeting over the window. Keelan was also pissed off because he’d had to move during the night. A steady drip of water from a fragile section of the roof above him had woken him up, forcing him to shift position.
They left the boy where he was, his eyes reflecting his traumatised state. Milo, probably the only one that sympathised with the young boy, had discreetly passed him a tin of tomatoes, not realising that they had taken the only tin opener available. They had checked for dogs before leaving, but the snow, although only a light fall for the moment, was being whipped around by an ever-surging wind, making it difficult to see more than a few metres ahead.
Milo took the lead again, having earned a reputation for being observant and aware of his surroundings, picking out likely places to find food and other titbits, a true scavenger. They crossed the path between the tall building, the factory, they had examined from the outside the previous day and the café they had just left, which took them to the rear of what they believed to be a food factory of sorts. They didn’t have high hopes that they would find anything. All the windows had been shattered, and pieces of flat roofing jutting out of the snow were indicative that some, if not all, of the roof was missing. The main door was a double door, solid and securely in place. But the windows along the back wall were all smashed, and access was easily gained to the inside of the factory. All three were relieved as they dropped into the room, grateful to escape the powerful wind and snow that was rapidly turning into a blizzard. The snow-covered floor reflected some light, what little there was from the darkened skies, which radiated through the window showing the space to be a toilet, male urinals along one of the walls.
Salt took the lead this time, Keelan behind him with the shotgun ready. They felt safer with the weapon, but all three were conscious that the seven cartridges were like gold dust and should be husbanded if they were to survive in this dog-eat-dog world they now found themselves in. Salt pulled the toilet door inwards and checked the corridor outside. To the left was a passageway that led to the double doors they weren’t able to access. Using a torch, now with fresh batteries taken from the family they had just left for dead, Salt turned right, passing a men’s locker room, his footwear sloshing through a ten-centimetre layer of slush. There was also a ladies’ toilet and locker room.
