Chapter Eleven

Scott’s head pounded as he regained consciousness. It felt like he had been awake for hours but unable to open his eyes or move. His head was groggy as he heard the echo of people talking not far from him.

As Scott sat up he realized he was not alone. Sitting across from him in a chair was Craig Callahan’s young son Cj. “That alien fucked you up,” Cj barked as he leapt out of his seat. Scott stood on weak legs, “should you be talking like that? What are you six?” Scott snarked at the kid as he made his way to the door. “Eight! Why does everyone think I’m a little kid!” Cj cried out behind Scott. The smell of food cooking in the kitchen brought Scott back to life. Mrs. Bolton was hard at work with the help of Cj’s little sister. Craig, Cj and Sarah’s father, was at the table with Mr. Bolton and their friend Tom. “Oh, that’s a lovely name dear,” Mrs. Bolton could be heard from the kitchen. Craig’s daughter Sarah was beside the Bolton matriarch. At the same time the men seated around the table erupted in laughter over their game of cards. Sarah ran off from the kitchen leaving Mrs. Bolton alone as Scott greeted everyone. “We thought you might be gone,” Mr. Bolton chuckled as he stood to shake Scott’s hand, saying, “Good to see you on your feet, son.” Scott looked around before he asked, “Where is Daphne?”

Nathan Bolton and Daphne Williams had been alternating shifts guarding the home. Over the weekend they had managed to kill three more aliens approaching the house. The storm outside had not stopped and it limited their view of the outside world. The days were dark as night and the aliens moved like shadows outside the Bolton home. One was no physical match, but if they came in numbers, Daphne feared they could take the house. Luckily they had remained undetected as long as they had. Daphne sat on the back patio as Scott approached her. “Hello beautiful,” He said as Daphne turned smiling at him. She was in his arms in an instant and happy to know he had recovered. “We were all worried about you,” Daphne said as they kissed. “I have to tell you something,” Scott said as they held each other. “It’s about this dream I had,” He spoke as Daphne looked up into his eyes. She nodded and replied, “I have a lot you need to hear, too.”

Nathan was ready for some of his mother’s delicious home cooking. The world had turned crazy but he could depend on her for a hot meal. Before dinner he wanted to go and check on their prisoner. Mr. Bolton and Daphne decided to keep the alien through the weekend. They moved their alien prisoner upstairs into Nathan’s bedroom. Mrs. Bolton immediately insisted on making meals for the alien upstairs. At first everyone was reluctant to feed it, but Mrs. Bolton vowed to go if no one else would.
