THE UPROOTING

One by one the trees uproot and float.

Some with crowns of leaves, some bare,

roots dangling as they lift over ponds

and fields. Now free of clinging,

they grow light, as though

they are made, after all, for air.

This is the second loneliness.

Released from hungers, they enter an unknown

country, drift without a map, without

the other. Black night, a new yielding.

Trunk, arms, and every twig in full

release before the splendor of dawn.

LIFTING YOU

Before I learn to run

among the others,

the tall ones

go in and out,

their shadows dipping

to lift and carry me.

It is April melting

for the meadowlark,

a flush of south wind

through the swinging door.

Scent of mother’s breast,

light around her hair,

light around his hair,

my father throws me

into the air, his face

pink with laughter.

I am caught

and then released

so that I can run

with the others.

I am now for another,

for everyone,

until October finds me

sitting still, listening

as light falls

around my hair.

Leaf by leaf I am

found, and I

am lifting you.
