Chapter 22

FALLEN, NEVADA:

The drive to Essex’s complex was familiar, and Okawna drove as if in the Indie 500, and fifteen minutes later, they notified Jim when they were getting close. When Okawna pulled into a vacant space in front of the security building, Jim met them in the parking lot and held out two visitor badges. “Just to make it official. Just follow me to my vehicle.”

Jim turned and entered a code and stared at the camera, then opened the door when he heard a buzz. No one paid them any attention as they strolled past the front desk and out the other side of the building. Once everyone was in the SUV, he backed away and headed through the compound. “Essex and Preston are having lunch in his living quarters, so your timing is perfect.”

Alex looked across the seat at Jim. “Any word from Rita?”

“Not that I know about, but Essex is acting a little depressed. I think he fell in love with her. I know she didn’t tell him the torpedo also instantly freezes water.”

“How did he find out?”

“Preston told him after it melted my car. Rita must have realized he would. That’s why she left before I went back to get them.”

“Listen, I don’t want to get you in trouble, so let’s enter through the visitor's door with you as our escort, and I’ll leave you out of the conversation.”

Jim parked near the entrance into a beautiful structure with glass spires on the roof, then Alex climbed out and led the way into the building and up to the familiar receptionist. “Hello again. We’d like to talk to John, if he’s available.”

The young man smiled. “Of course, Mr. Cave. He’s having lunch with a friend, but I’ll let him know you and Mr. Okawna are here.”

“Thank you.”

***

Preston stared after Essex, who hadn’t said a word when he bolted from the room. He stood, wondering what was so important.

At the reception desk, the office door suddenly burst open and Essex appeared, grinning from ear to ear, then held out his arms as he approached Alex. “I’m so glad you guys stopped by. It worked, Alex! I went into orbit and came back in one piece.”

Alex couldn’t help but smile at Essex’s enthusiasm. “Well, congratulations, John. Any problems? Like a second signal taking over the SV1?”

Essex stopped smiling. “Let’s go into my living quarters. Steve Preston is here, and neither of us knows how it happened.”

When Essex indicated for him to go first, Alex walked through the doorway into the living room, followed by Okawna and Essex, who closed the door. Evidently, Essex didn’t want Jim to hear the conversation.

***

Preston heard the door close and walked to the breezeway, and stopped when he saw Cave and Okawna standing in the living room. He turned around and moved back into the kitchen to continue eating his lunch.

Essex indicated for Alex and Okawna to sit down, then turned and looked through the breezeway into the kitchen. “We have visitors, Steve. Come out so we can talk about what happened.
