Dakota sank onto the couch and brought her feet up under her then grabbed the throw pillow I’d purchased for her to hold when she came over. She had come to love her curves and the extra weight she carried, but she was still more comfortable holding a pillow when lounging around to hide her extra belly fat.

Dakota ate some of the fried rice we had delivered for dinner. “What are you wearing on your date?”

My head swiveled around so I faced Kota, and I shrugged. “Lia said I should wear the blue slinky one, but I think that’s too much for a first date.”

Dreya was crouched next to me as we filled our plates with Chinese food. “That one makes you look like you have a great butt. I’d go with it.”

Dea laughed. “Give him a preview of what he can expect.”

I rolled my eyes. “That is not going to happen. I’m not even sure we will be going to dinner.”

Delphine sat cross-legged at the end of the coffee table. “You need to get out there again and see there are good men. Besides, one date doesn’t mean you have to sleep with him or jump into a serious relationship.” She had covered her mouth while she chewed making it hard to hear her clearly.

Camilla lifted a bite of orange chicken and smelled it before popping it into her mouth. “Mmm. This is delicious. I’ve never tasted Chinese food before. I’ve heard you say you have children and are past childbearing years, so why would Noah want to date you?”

Cami was picking up the modern use of language and slang rather quickly. That was not the case with the rest of the social mores. Lia smiled at the ghoul. “People have married for love and not their ability to have children for a couple of centuries now. It’s often a physical attraction that prompts someone to ask for a date. From there you assess each other based on shared interests and whether or not you enjoy each other's company.”

Camilla’s face pinched making her look like she’d bitten a sour lemon. “That seems so odd. Of course, if you can walk into a store to buy food and other necessities, children aren’t as important as they used to be.”

I nodded. “How much do you know about the magical world? I’ve wondered how things used to be for them. Noah mentioned shifters had their Fated One but does that apply to all magical creatures?”

Cami shrugged her shoulders. “I have little experience and knowledge about that part of my heritage. There were stories and we had voodoo priestesses visit the plantation, but the information was kept from us. Our owners didn’t want us to know too much. They feared we would rebel or find a way to escape.”

"I can’t imagine how that must have been. No way would I tolerate some jerk telling me what to do or beating me because he didn’t like the way I made his bed. Forget that shit.
