Back in the main part of the store, Hel sifted through layers of junk to locate some items of interest. Several were beyond Gunnar’s price range, including a dark elven cloak, a set of polished steel daggers in a black leather case, a pair of enchanted glasses that enhanced Dark Sight, an array of potions and spells, and so on.

Unfortunately, Gunnar did not have much money left. Suddenly, he felt foolish for feeling guilty about pickpocketing. But he also knew that cutting purses was hardly the way to gain the sort of items he would need if he managed to gain the favor of a guild. He needed some real money, which meant a real job. Soon.

In the end, he replenished his sheath of throwing knives and promised himself that he would be back soon for better items.

“Do you trade?” he asked after he’d paid her.

Hel grunted. “Stolen items, yeh’re asking about?”

Gunnar shrugged.

“Look around,” Hel said with a laugh. “What yeh think all this stuff is?”

Gunnar smiled. The gruff orc woman was growing on him.

“Yeh bring me something good, I’ll always take a look. But be mindful who yeh steal from. Someone too high interest, and they come looking. And it should go without saying, but never from the Red Cloaks.”

“Never?” Gunnar asked.

“Never. There’s an agreement. A peace, yeh might say. Yeh’re a good Arkan boy now and a citizen of Thailen. Yeh been in this city for a good long time, and yeh’re supposed ter know the way of things. Never touch the Red Cloaks. Never touch the priests of Luka. Never touch the nobles of the High City. And yeh just might make yerself something. Now, if our business is concluded, I’ll ask yeh to kindly carry on. I don’t like anyone lingering around too long.”

“You worried about Red Cloaks?”

“Yeh’ve still got plenty to learn, boy. But yeh might do all right. Good luck too yeh in the trials. Yeh keep coin coming my way, and we’ll get along just fine.”

With that, Hel turned away and returned to her back room, leaving Gunnar alone.

For the briefest moment, he considered all the unattended items before him. But something told him Hel had thought through those sorts of basic risks. He couldn’t imagine there was surveillance, but maybe enchantments or something.

It wasn’t the sort of job he was looking for, anyway.
