CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Later that night, after the drama was over, Oz went to Gloria’s house. She was, as she told her father she would be, in bed asleep when her doorbell rang. She knew it had to be Oz because it wasn’t just a one ring and then you wait. He rang that bell repeatedly. Since she had The Ring doorbell, she grabbed her cell phone and looked. Just to be certain. And there he was, standing on her stoop, like the impatient man she knew so well.

She got out of bed, put on her robe, and made her way to her front door. She didn’t want to deal with Oz tonight. She truly didn’t. But she knew she had to confront him eventually.

She opened the door, but didn’t give him safe passage through. “What do you want, Oz?” she asked him.

“May I at least come in?”

“No. What do you want?”

“I want us to talk like two civilized individuals.”

“Civilized? You mean like the way you busted into your brother’s home and knocked the shit out of him? That kind of civilized?”

“That’s not fair, Glo. And you know it!”

Gloria knew he was right. “You’re right,” she said. “And I apologize for that.”

“May I come in then?”

“No.”

“No? We need to talk, Glo.”

“There’s nothing to talk about. I have talked to you and talked to you. I told you what I wasn’t going to take anymore, and you dismissed it as if I hadn’t told you a damn thing. That’s over, Oz. That’s over!”

She moved to close her door, but Oz blocked it with his shoe. “Are you saying we’re over?” he asked her with fear and trepidation in his eyes.

But when he saw the pain in her eyes, and that same steely determination she displayed when she was no longer taking it, he didn’t wait for a response. He was afraid of what it might be. He removed his shoe. And she closed the door.

Oz stood there momentarily, shocked that it truly could be over between them, and then he walked slowly to his car. What if she would have told him that they were done? What if she would have gone all the way there? Oz didn’t know what he would have done had she uttered those words.

But as soon as he got in his car, his cell phone rang. And to only compound his misery, it was his guy in Belgium.

“I found out about Sideris’s family,” Oz’s man said.

“And?” asked Oz.

“I don’t know if they had ever been held for ransom or not, to prevent Sid from talking, but I do know it didn’t work.”

“What do you mean?” Oz asked. “Sid didn’t talk. He didn’t tell me which syndicate he hired to cripple my operations and why they killed Kazan and tried to ambush me. He didn’t tell me any of that shit.”

“But apparently they didn’t get the memo,” Oz’s man said over the phone. “Because as soon as they heard that Sideris had been snatched, and snatched by Mick Sinatra’s men, they knew it was over for him.
