Ronnie’s on Castor Avenue, similar to Arnold’s on the famous Happy Days television program, opened in late 1957. The off-street restaurant, founded by local real estate icon Harry Toben, addressed the need for a modern and up-to-date place for youngsters and families to gather. (Courtesy of Harry Toben.)

Another Castor Avenue landmark was Lenny’s Hot Dogs, founded by the South Philadelphians Max and Ida Kravitz, who turned the 1935 business over to their son, Lenny. Lenny opened three other outlets. The attraction of hot dogs, fishcakes, and cherry soda allowed parents to recall their own childhoods from many sections of the city and continue the tradition with birthday parties. The Polar Cub hamburgers on Cottman was a competitor. (Courtesy of Betty Anne Gray.)
