The tailor arrived midafternoon with my new clothes, whipped up with impressive speed. As I tried them on one by one, she smiled and marked any adjustments needed. âThese are fun to make. Gives me a change from the usual noble wives and their shapeless dresses.â
I turned in the mirror and examined the curve of my ass in the reflection. Perfect. âIt must get boring.â
Noble ladies favored long, flowing dresses in bright banded colors. Pretty enough, but not sexy or flattering unless you had a willowy, straight-up-and-down figure.
The door slammed open and we both jumped, scrambling into bows when the prince stalked in. âLeave us,â he barked at the tailor. She ran for the door.
I sank to my knees, and the skintight contour dress Iâd been modeling rode up my thighs. I waited for the prince to tap my chin and tell me to look at him, but he didnât. His feet came to rest in front of me.
âYou had a busy day yesterday.â
His voice could have frozen the ocean. Not a shred of the warmth heâd shown yesterday remained. Was that a direct question? I answered anyway. âYes, Your Highness. A lot to organizeââ
âYou know what Iâm talking about. Brawling like a common street whore.â
âIâmââ
âHow do you think that reflects on me? And . . .â His voice grew soft and dangerous. âYou didnât report it to me. I had to hear about it secondhand from Sotaris. I donât enjoy looking foolish, Talia.â
âIâm sorry, Your Highness.â
âYouâre my personal property now. An assault on you is an assault on me. That girl is lucky sheâs not imprisoned.â
I swallowed. Trying to persuade the prince to show leniency felt like a very, very bad idea. But Iâd promised, and I wasnât a coward. âPlease, Your Highness. She barely touched me. Sotaris must have made it sound worse than it was. She doesnât deserveââ
The slap, hard across my cheekbone, cut me off. I gasped and pressed my hand to my cheek, eyes clamped shut. âDonât ever lie to me again. I saw the footage.â
I breathed deeply as the sting faded and tried to keep my voice steady. âSorry, Your Highness.â
âCome.â
I followed him into his rooms, pausing only to shed my clothes at the threshold. He led me to his bedroom, and I braced. What erotic torture did he have in mind for me tonight? The clamps and flogger again? Or something new?
Instead, he pointed to a spot in the corner of the room. âStand there. Face the wall.â
I complied. He didnât even touch me. âYouâll remain here for two hours. If you move or speak, I add an extra hour. I can see you at all times.â
He left.
I fought the urge to turn and stare after him, keeping my eyes locked on the corner where the walls joined. A smooth expanse of paint, perfectly flat. No bumps or ridges to run the eye over; no spots where the color varied. I stared and stared, trying and failing to mark the passing of time.
It was torture.
