Owls also have very rough scales with tiny pointed spines on the bottom of their feet called spicules. Spicules help an owl hold onto slippery prey much like cleaning gloves with bumps help people grip slick objects. Spicules also help owls keep their grasp on branches, making it possible for many owl species to simply walk up strongly angled branches without having to fly.
