The next morning, I woke to the smell of bacon and coffee. Stumbling out of my tent like a zombie, I saw the werewolves, Jason, and Emma gathered around a large fire in the early morning mist. “Hey,” I said.

“Morning,” Emma said.

“Morning,” I said, rubbing my eyes with the back of my hand. “Jason! Where were you?”

He glared at me sullenly and then turned away.

Damn.

“Where’d you find him?” I pointed toward Jason. “And where’d he sleep last night?” Because he sure didn’t make it back to our cozy two-person tent.

“In our tent, and in our tent,” Eddie said. “You may want to zap him as soon as you can. He’s pretty angry and growing angrier—apparently, this energy gets stronger and stronger the longer you’re exposed to it.” He pointed. “Lothian’s watching him. He’ll keep him from running off again.”

I nodded and looked over at Jason. He’d turned back while I spoke to everyone and had been staring at me. He looked away the moment I met his gaze.

Ouch.

I grabbed a muffin, a piece of melon, and a cup of coffee and choked it down quickly to give my system some sugar to burn up when I zapped him. The magic, for me, was simple, and I had no idea why my stomach jumped nervously…but it did.

“Yes, you do,” Archie called down from a tree branch. “What if you zap him, and he—”

“Shut up.” I glared daggers at the know-it-all owl.

“Astra—” Jason warned me angrily, but I cut him off.

“I know you’re feeling something, and before I do what I need to do, I want you to know I’m not angry at you,” I told him. “I’m angry about this whole stupid situation.” I shook my head. “It’s not your fault. I’m not mad at you. Remember that, okay?”

“I don’t care what you are.” Jason stood up from his chair, chest out, and I tensed at his blistering tone. I could see the anger in his eyes, the way his jaw was clenched tight. “I don’t like it this way,” he told me as Lothian pressed him back down in the chair. “It’s too messy.”

I didn’t ask what he meant.

I closed my eyes, swallowed, opened them, and said, “I’m sorry. I hope that you feel better after this.” I reached toward him and, without caring who could see, held out my palm and zapped him with starlight in the bright morning sun.

The light was blinding, and I felt the jolt of electricity as it hit him. Jason convulsed once and then went still. I dropped my hand and watched as he slowly opened his eyes and sat up, looking dazed but no longer furious.

“Hi,” he whispered, his eyes full of love and relief.

“Are you okay?” I asked, stepping toward him and squatting down so we were eye to eye. “You look better.”

“I feel better,” he said and smiled. “I feel so much better. I’m sorry.”

I smiled at him. “It’s okay,” I said. “I’m sorry, too.”

“What happened?” he asked, looking around. “What’d I do?”

“You were angry at me.
