Your Personal and Professional Circles of Support
1. Write your name in the middle circle of the first diagram, and in the circles around the outside, write all the people who support you in your personal life. Include family and friends, babysitters, doctors, teachers, coaches, and service providers with whom you have a personal relationship. (The person who reads your electrical meter wouldn’t be on your list, but the one who does your taxes every year might be.) For each person, write a few words describing how they support you.
2. On a separate diagram, do the same thing with the people who support you in your professional life—associates, bosses, team-mates, accountants, suppliers, clients, and so on. In each circle, write a few words describing how they support you.
3. At the bottom of each page, write all the people you came up with who can help you eliminate the tasks on your 80 Percent List. For example, you might include a dry cleaner who picks up and delivers, a great babysitter, a reliable housecleaner, a computer whiz who can keep your PC running no matter what, a neighbor who helps you with your “Honey-Do” list—whoever would take over the tasks you don’t want to do.
4. Finally, look at your 20 Percent List—the things that give you the most results in your life. Who could you add to your dream team to help you get even more results? Are there people in your current dream team who could support you even more with these tasks? Add the new people to your support circles, and under the names of the people you believe could offer you even more support, write what you would like them to do.
Sometimes we have people in our current dream team who aren’t supporting us as well as we would like. You may have a CPA you’ve been using for years, but your finances have become more complex and he or she isn’t up to the task. Or one of your in-laws took care of your children when they were infants, but now you’d prefer to put your kids in a day-care setting. Or perhaps you have a friend who likes to smoke and you no longer do unless you’re in his company. There’s a saying in Spanish that translates as, “Tell me who you associate with and I’ll tell you who you are.” When it comes to your dream team, you’re only as strong as your weakest link. Hard as it may be, you need to ask, “Who’s really supporting me at the highest level? Who isn’t supporting me? Is there a ‘weak link’ that I need to either replace or limit my contact with, or at the very least change the rules of our relationship?” With the CPA, for instance, you may need to find some-one who has the financial expertise you require. If you place your children in day care, you’ll need to change your relationship with your in-law from caregiver to family. And you may need
