FOOTBALL COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR Dave Ablauf once again picked Karan Higdon to be one of three offensive players to handle the post-game press conference. He had a lot to brag about. No one had run for 100 yards on Maryland’s defense all year, and he had just tagged them for 103 yards on 23 carries—his fourth game in a row running for more than 100 yards. He was on pace to break 1,000 if he avoided injury.

But what he wanted to talk about was the offensive line. “They grow every single week,” he told me. “They’re getting better and better. They’re really finding their groove.”

Higdon hopped in his car for the drive back to Sterling Heights.

“The other guys like to party in their houses or in the bars, but I love going home to see my family.”

They would relax and watch some football—but not before his daughter, Kiyah, who had just turned four, gave him her assessment of his play with a thumbs up or down. She’s no pushover, having giving him thumbs down after a game in 2017.

As soon as Higdon got out of his car, “She’s jumping in my arms, talking to me about the game. Thumbs up! Then she’s telling me how she wants to get a Halloween costume. So we go get a costume at Party City—‘Elsa’ from Frozen—then we watched more football.”

Kiyah fell asleep in her daddy’s arms.
