The Third Crossing

Tanny hit the floor with a stumble, but she quickly caught her balance.

Oh shit, she thought. You did it. Hell yeah. Oka—

Gore hit Tanny like a freight train hitting a duck. He let out a sound that was a mix between a confused grunt and a frustrated grumble. As the purple glow dimmed, Tanny clambered back to her feet. She wasn’t fast enough to find the light switch before the room was swallowed in darkness. Gore, his eyes built for the dark, made his way to the panel. He smacked it, harder than necessary, his spiked arm leaving a shallow gash in the wall above it as he lowered his arm back down to his side. He clumsily pushed the door open and sniffed the air outside. He grunted and disappeared out of Tanny’s sight.

Oh man, she thought. I guess we’re doing this.

Just as Milo and Ami before them, Tanny made her way through the abandoned hallway, leaving the room behind her, and headed towards the brightly lit lobby.

“Took you long enough,” Ami said. She had a mouthful of meat, presumably taken from the dead raccoon hanging over the firepit beside her. She lifted up the DimCom. “Ami to Ryam. Third Crossing made it through.”

cchhrrr “Good. Tanny, do not disappoint me. Handing comms back over to Kary. Over.” cchhrrr

“Copy that, darling. Speak to you soon.” Ami set the DimCom down and tossed a chunk of meat onto the floor. Gore gleefully pounced upon it and gobbled it up. He approached her and snorted—the beast still hungered.

“Who’s a good boy?” Ami asked him. “I missed you, my beautiful monster. Don’t worry. We’ll get you out on a hunt soon enough.” She took another bite of raccoon and tossed its bone into the fire.

“You heard your father,” she said to Tanny, not bothering to look her way. “Don’t let him down.”

Kack him, thought Tanny. He’ll be an ass regardless.

“What’s our first move?” she asked her stepmother.

“Well,” Ami said, standing and picking up a duffel bag filled with gear. “First, we gotta get y’all into the city. It’ll be easy with Gore as protection out here at first. It’ll get trickier once we get past the wall.” Gore perked up at the sound of his name. “Then we’ll have to settle you in. Milo, rat as he is, found an empty apartment to squirrel me away in. The place next door is almost always empty. If we time it right, you should be good to stay there for a while with Gore without anybody noticing. If the couple living there shows up, he can deal with it. Can’t you boy?” Gore snarled. “It’s okay, it’s okay. I know, you wanted to get away from Tanny for a bit.”

Great. Stuck with Dad’s little beast.

At least I’ll have space from the bitch.

Ami stuck the DimCom into the duffel and slung it over her shoulder. She started towards the exit with Gore crawling closely by her side. Tanny followed, reluctantly.

“And then what?”

“Then, girl,” Ami said as she held the door open for Tanny and Gore.
