Before the GSP, no feeder designer took advantage of the simple fact that birds fly and squirrels don’t.1 Feeders have to be attached to something—usually a pole or a hanging chain—and squirrels merely have to scale that support to reach the feed. But the GSP’s principle is that the feed should be placed in a part of the feeder that can only be accessed by creatures that fly. To get to the GSP’s feed, an animal has to fly up; there’s no way to climb into the seed compartment. Squirrels do get on top of the GSP, but because the feeder curves around like a beach ball, squirrels can’t climb around to reach the opening on the bottom.
