Chapter 12 Day 8

Sam

I wait impatiently for Michelle and the others to arrive. I can feel the zombies running around the base. None of them have been shot yet, but two of them are chowing down on the gate guard that let me in. One of them looks up and hisses in hunger when he sees the jeep pull up. I direct him and the other zombie to go somewhere else, so Michelle can drive the jeep into the base.

She gets the jeep in and everyone gets out.

“We need to start opening doors to the buildings. The tunnels will be in some of those buildings,” she says.

“Do you want me to send the zombies into the tunnels?” I ask.

“No, keep them here for the moment. They’ll keep the people topside occupied and might even help distract the people down below.”

“Fair enough,” I say.

I walk to the building nearest to me and pull on the door. It opens. There’s no one inside. It looks like a storage unit, but I walk in anyway and look around. There’s a bunch of boxes piled against the walls. I go over to the boxes and start moving them. I’ve moved a couple of them, when I stop on something and hear a sound. A moment later a door hisses open.

“I’ve found a tunnel entrance,” I say into the walkie, and then wait for Michelle and the others to come over. While I’m waiting, I connect with the zombies. All fifteen are still alive and they’re still running all over the place. I keep them away from the immediate area so they leave my allies alone.

Michelle saunters into the storage area with Alisha. Ember, and Tanya following.

“Good work finding an entrance. We’ll go through here and see what happens. They’ve sent out a few more soldiers, but your zombies are making it harder for them. I think Joanna is helping them as well.”

I can feel Joanna nearby. I show her where we are, but she doesn’t seem interested in coming over to join us, so I let the connection go.

“She’s here, so you’re probably right. Let’s get this over with and find Eslinger. He should be able to soon communicate with the zombies as well, and that could mean trouble for us, especially if I have to fight him for control.”

We march into the tunnel. It’s got lighting in it and it’s not very long before we come to another door. I open the door and we enter into a T junction with the two hallways going in opposite directions.

“Which way do you want to explore?” I ask.

“Ember and I are going to the left. You, Alisha, and Tanya go to the right.”

We head to the right. There’s no one down there. After we’ve walked a couple of minutes Alisha tugs on my arm.

“Why are you taking orders from Michelle?”

“She knows what she’s doing, Alisha. Whatever is between us personally, I’m not going to let it get in the way of stopping Eslinger. You seem to be taking her orders as well.
