After sunset

Dramatic photographic opportunities often continue even after the sun dips below the horizon. During those few minutes of pre and post dawn, direct shadows disappear and the light becomes more muted, but clouds often glow with increased illumination. You might even see alpenglow, a phenomenon that sometimes occurs when the sun is just below a clear horizon. Alpenglow is caused by the indirect scattering of sunlight on dust, water, and ice particles that may be present in the sky, and it’s usually seen as a glowing band of red or pink light at the edge of the opposite skyline. It’s especially dramatic when it appears on high mountain peaks.
