Sylvanja gazed at Jindom’s profile. He was a handsome man and an accomplished lover. He had all the power she could ever want. He would have made a good mate for her. Too bad. She didn’t like his cruelty or his treacherous heart.

She ran a hand over his chest and down to his navel. “You look troubled, Jindom. You should be sleeping after all that we just shared.”

He frowned and looked at her. “I can’t sleep. My campaign is not going well.”

She pretended innocence. “You mean, your search for Kael Jai?”

He took her hand and brought her fingers to his lips, kissing her knuckles. “You would make a great mate for me, Sylvanja.”

She smiled. “Interesting. I was just thinking the same of you.”

His eyes lit with hope. But she dare not push him too far. If she capitulated too soon, he would lose trust in her. She turned with a sigh and lay on her back. “But I can’t be sure. You’ve kept me here, sequestered, as if you are ashamed of me. It’s been ages since I’ve seen the crystal pools of Sharelle, the green hills of Nagarr. I’m quite simply bored.”

He rolled over to gaze down into her face. “I’m not ashamed of you, Sylvanja. People fear you. Almost as much as they fear me.”

“Or more,” she mused, her silver-blue gaze fixed on his.

“It just hasn’t been wise for me to parade you around like a prize. Not until....”

“Until you capture Kael Jai and end this game,” she finished for him.

“Precisely. Then the people will follow me and I can do whatever I like.”

She touched his cheek with her hand. “You already do what you like.”

He let out a soft chuckle.

“So, let me help you then. You ask me to seek for you, but then you tell me nothing.”

He rolled onto his back and stared at the deep red canopy above the bed where they lay. “I tell you more than I should.”

She leaned over him again. “You don’t trust me then?”

He sat up and turned away from her, his feet touching the floor. “I’ve sent three Sulcrums and two Rydyrs. None have returned. Kael Jai is a brilliant strategist....” He broke off and said no more. “My spies tell me that the keeper Sylph sent a message requesting assistance in finding Kael Jai. But I do not know if this is truth or lies.”

Sylvanja stared at his muscled back. “But you know he’s there.”

Jindom shrugged. “The priejsts are a difficult lot. Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t. They possess technology and magic that I do not. Perhaps they fool me even now.”

She sat up and put a hand on his shoulder. “Is that why you don’t trust me? Because I was once one of them?”

He looked over his shoulder at her. “You have never been anyone’s, Sylvanja. Only your own.”

She tilted her chin down and said no more. He stood up and pulled on his pants. “You will be returning to Nagarr?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“And leaving me behind?”

He turned to look at her as he pulled on his shirt.
