Oh now, Ray, you’re being ridiculous. A little gas is a perfectly natural thing; it happens to everyone. Even Jake. Now even though you might think Jake would be relieved if you cut out on him and headed home, you’re wrong. Hopefully, the gas leak has been stopped and you can get out there and turn this night around.

Ever the optimist. I left the bathroom and returned to the table, where Jake grinned mischievously up at me as I sat down. I knew my face must be a brilliant shade of crimson from the ever-present heat just beneath my skin. I wagged my finger at him. “Don’t you say a word, mister. It happens to us all.”

Jake held up his hands in mock defense. “Hey. I wasn’t going to say a thing.” He paused, looking over the menu, “Except maybe you might want to avoid tonight’s special.” He looked at me with such innocent brown eyes that I fell right into his trap.

“Which is?”

“Greens and beans.”

He started to snicker and, at first, I was outraged. How dare he make fun of me! Did he have any idea how hard this was for me?

And then I thought, oh come on, now, he’s using a little humor to ease the tension that’s probably radiating off you. I shook my head and joined in the laughter. And soon, we found ourselves having a very good time.

Beer flowed, wine flowed, and so did the conversation. Jake and I actually did have quite a bit in common, including a love for horror movies, an area in which I could never convince Alice to share my fascination.

When we left that night, I was a little disappointed when Jake, outside the restaurant, said he needed to be getting home because he had to get up early for work the next day. “Saturday’s our busiest day of the week.”
