Chapter Twenty-Five

Palia couldn’t get the stench of vomit out of her nostrils and she couldn’t get the sound of gunfire out of her ears. It echoed around the honeycomb lattice, mingling with the constant tapping of thousands of kluqetik footsteps.

She turned to Ruslan. ‘Who boarded us? What’s happening?’

His mask obscured his expression, but he held his head still, tilted to one side. His stance had the same feel to it as it would on a kluqetik – too still, too tense.

‘We need to get to our rooms,’ he said and, bursting back into motion, began to move away.

‘What?’ Palia grabbed his wrist. ‘No one else on this ship is in suits. If that’s the hive mind boarding us, we’re the best equipped to fight them. Aren’t we?’

Ruslan let out a huff of laughter. ‘You’re not even armed.’

‘I—’ But no, she didn’t have the Empyrean anymore. ‘I could be.’

‘Do you know how fast the tuk-a-wa can spread? You see how fast the kluqetik are? By the time we reach whatever’s going on, they could have taken the whole ship. We’re better off holing ourselves up in our rooms where they can’t get to us.’
