HELEN ASSESSED THE lineup of models.

“One minute to go,” she told them, loud enough for them to hear but quiet enough that the audience around the corner wouldn’t. “All ready?” she asked, waiting for their nods of affirmation before she gave them an encouraging smile and slipped to the front of the room.

“Okay, Anya. We’re all set,” she told her friend.

Anya gave her the thumbs-up and spoke into her headset to alert the sound and lighting techs.

“You’re good back here?” Anya asked.

Helen narrowed her eyes. “What do you think?”

Anya suppressed a giggle. “But of course. All right, I’m up.”

“You’re going to rock it,” Helen told her. Anya was introducing the event. Helen was glad that Anya enjoyed the emcee role, because being in front of a room full of people wasn’t exactly her idea of a good time.

She shifted backstage again, where Grant was snapping photos of the models looking giddy as they waited. He glanced over at her and her heart warmed at the smile he gave her—a smile that was just for her, and no one else.

The lights brightened out front.

“Go time,” Scarlett murmured, straightening up and setting her shoulders. She was leading the line. Her experience as a perpetual performer had given the other models confidence. Helen winked at her and then, as the music started, she gave Scarlett the nod, and the fashion show began.
