CHAPTER TWELVE

Kenny drove Maris to Amplified in his armored rig, but he insisted that the dog had to ride in the back.

Maris didn’t mind. It wasn’t exactly her dog. She still asked why.

“It’s because that dog of yours smells like hairy rat ass. Hairy rat ass in summertime.”

“Really?” She glanced at the dog, not sure what Kenny found so distasteful about the smell. Maybe it was the lingering scent of human blood mixed with beef jerky.

“Really.”

Maris shrugged. “I’m going to have to lift him. He’s still too hurt to get up there himself.”

It turned out that she was wrong. When she lowered the tailgate so she could load the dog, he hopped up on his own, whimpering at the pain but still capable of getting up there.

“So, you’re a tough guy,” she commented. He went to the back and looked at her, but she could have sworn he was amused. She went up front with Kenny, and they drove to Boss Max’s nightclub.

As they pulled up, little knots and groups of people approached the front door, only to be turned away by three burly bouncers. The impatient men were none too gentle about it.

“You see that?” she asked Kenny. “Is the place not open yet?”

“As far as I know, they should be open. You know what? Boss Max must be enjoying himself if he’s closed the club to everyone except his goons.”

Well, there’s an encouraging thought.

“You know, you’re right. I should probably get in there and see what I can do for Spyder.”

Kenny shook his head. “I’ll tell you what, I would not want to be Spyder right now. Not sure what you think you can do about it.”

“You won’t want to be Boss Max in about five minutes.”

She opened the door, stepped down, and turned back to Kenny. “Can you wait out here for me? That way I’ll have a way to transport Spyder.”

“I’m not a wheelman,” he skeptically replied.

She frowned. “A wheelman?”

“I’m not a getaway driver. This rig might be armored, but that doesn’t mean I’m looking to get in any high-speed chases, you know what I’m saying?”

“We’re not going to get chased.” She was confident, but Kenny was still skeptical.

“What exactly are you planning to do here?”

“I’m planning to walk in, ask them to set Spyder free, and forget about the whole thing.”

Kenny laughed. “You’re going to ask? That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard! What are you gonna do when they say no?”

She patted the gun sticking out of her belt. “I’m going to negotiate...aggressively.”

“Shit. You’re trying to get me killed along with Spyder.” Kenny looked glum, but she took this to mean he would wait for her.

She closed the door and moved to talk to the dog. “Stay here. I’ll be back in a minute.”

The dog looked at her with his big pink tongue hanging out. She didn’t know if he understood her. She didn’t know if he’d ever been trained or had a human family, but it would have to do.

Then she walked down the street and approached the nightclub.
