Chapter Six
After a few hours, Daisy was fed up with the dust and general grime and her arms ached from brushing the walls and beams. She wasnât entirely sure how somewhere that had been boarded up for years could be this dusty, but there was a thick layer on everything. Max had taken a break from inside and was blasting weeds with the industrial weed killer Aunt Coral had dropped off. Daisy took a deep lungful of fresh sea air and sat down on the platform edge.
âWe should get lunch,â she called to Max. He checked his watch and came over.
âIâll finish off spraying first because I know how far Iâve got. Then Iâd better go straight to work.â
âBut youâll need to eat.â
âItâs okay, itâll take me about twenty-five minutes to walk to the leisure centre. Iâll grab a pasty on the way.â
Daisy hesitated. âOr I could give you a lift.â She pointed at her motorbike. âThen weâd have time to eat the pasties in the café. Itâs not good for your digestive system to eat and walk at the same time.â She had no idea what she was going on about.
âOn that death trap?â
âIt hasnât killed me yet,â said Daisy getting to her feet. âThere have been some close calls, mind.â She dusted herself down â what she would give for running water right now to wash her hands. She had rung the water company but apparently with a disused building it wasnât as straight- forward as just turning the water supply back on, she would have to wait until they paid her a visit.
When Max had finished distributing the weed killer he strolled over to stand next to Daisy making her notice exactly how tall he was. He was towering over her and she wasnât short at five foot seven. She looked at Max and she looked at her little bike. What was the worst that could happen?
Daisy put her helmet on, got on the bike and waited for Max to join her. He swung his leg over the seat and she felt his body engulf hers as he bent his knees and his legs rested on either side of her thighs. She hadnât thought this through at all. It seemed extremely intimate to have Maxâs body pushed up against her. She could feel the heat radiating from him and her treacherous body was delighting in the closeness. She straightened her back and her resolve.
âYou okay without a helmet?â she asked over her shoulder. At least she didnât have to make eye contact like this.
âYeah, itâs not far.â
âJust in case Jason is about Iâll stick to the bridleway then technically weâre not breaking the law.â
Daisy froze and she waited for Max to put his arms around her waist, but instead he put his hands behind him and gripped the sissy bar at the back of the bike. Daisy tried to let the large breath sheâd been holding in escape subtly. âLetâs go.â She revved the old engine and it spluttered into life.
