Chapter 30

Greeting Party

New Hope Town

By 4:30 in the afternoon Ciara had finished up at the school and after working with her group for a while she excused herself and borrowed one of the school’s common use bicycles and headed for the residence arriving there ten minutes later. Her friends, shuttle pilots Lieutenants Moira Sullivan, Erin Quinn and several others were there to greet her and she asked when the new officers would be arriving. Told that the first group was on its way Ciara waited expectantly, hoping that Bridget would be among them.

Since Naomi MacCaffrey was unable to be at the house to meet the new arrivals she had asked Major Ju Qian, one of the off-duty medical officers, to lead the greeting party in her place. The Chinese major was currently one of the only two officers besides MacCaffrey above the rank of captain living in the residence, Zoey Bryant being the other. The other more senior females were either at one of the other settlements or had their private quarters at the Ranger Base. Naomi wanted to make sure that the newcomers, a group that included a number of women of higher rank than the average resident, were greeted appropriately and she didn’t want to have to leave it to some young lieutenant or captain to explain why the newly arriving major or lieutenant colonel would be sleeping on air mattresses while more junior officers had their own beds. Ju was also the highest-ranking female doctor in New Hope Town at the moment, Lieutenant Colonel Margo Carmody was running the hospital in Winter Haven while Major Lucia Abrazzi was now assigned to Castillo, and many of the newcomers were going to be medical personnel.

The first bus from the Ranger Base carried 15 of the new arrivals. Dressed in Ranger fatigues Ciara stayed off to the side and searched their faces as they stepped off the bus but she did not see Bridget so she stepped back knowing that Ju and the others had work to do.

Ju led the greeting party to welcome the newcomers, with someone there representing each of the different group within the Regiment. While Ju would take the medical personnel in hand, Moira Sullivan represented the aircrews and Olivia Fischer, who had led the security detachment on the now sunken transport Barcelona and was now living at the residence, would welcome the new security officers. Aiko Miyagi was off-duty from her job in the comm center at the new terminal and was there to meet any comm specialists who might be in the group. Laney Keller was there to meet any administrative or logistics officers as they arrived. There were several other officers at the house at the moment as well and some of them were in the backyard area and kitchen preparing a welcome barbeque dinner for the new house guests. More would be returning to the residence as they completed their duty shifts for the day.

The Chinese major and the other officers were not wearing any uniforms; they all wore Ranger shorts and T-shirts with running shoes or sandals.
