Chapter 14

The night had fallen on the village, and I decided to go to the prison yard where the sorceress was kept.

It was in a field fenced around solid bricks, and the gate was made of thick oak wood. As I walked through the door, the warriors saw me and saluted; I went straight to where the prisoners were kept, to the sorceress’s cell.

I saw her dressed in tattered gray cloth and asked for the prison to be opened. Then I went in. I looked at her face for a while. She refused to look at me.

“I won’t hurt you, even though you have caused the deaths of so many of my warriors.”

“So did the paladin, and her knight killed some of your warriors,” she said. I was shocked. I did not get what she meant by that. Was she talking about Sashara? I acted as though I hadn’t heard her say that.

“What is your name?” I asked.

“Mevalin,” she said, not looking at me.

After some seconds of silence, I said, “If you will agree to no longer serve Count Domallius and join me and my forces, I will set you free.”

“You don’t know who Count Domallius is. You are no match for him. When he invades you and your people, he won’t kill me because he won’t see me as a traitor, but as a prisoner. If you free me, then I’ll be losing my one chance to survive.”

“I have defeated Count Domallius’s forces twice, and I will do it again,” I said.

She looked at me, then away.

“So, what do you want to do with me now? Why not kill me at once and end all my misery? Let me be free from the orcs and free from Count Domallius.”

“No, I need you alive. I need you on my side. I know you don’t want to serve Count Domallius. He uses your power for evil. He forces you to do things that would destroy you. I saw how weak you were after you caused the explosion with the magic. What does it feel like? Do you feel good about it? Do you feel well?”

“I lose my strength! I feel tortured from the inside. I feel drained and used up,” she said, sobbing. “I feel sick.”

“Then why allow them to do that to you?”

“I have no choice! My home is in Count Domallius’s estate, and that is where I’ve always been. I was born and raised there. I don’t like Count Domallius. He is the worst man I’ve ever seen in my life, but I fight with him because I don’t have a choice.”

“But now you do. Come to me, and I will set you free.”

“How am I sure you are going to win against him? You could only bring me to my death,” she said.

“I will give you time to think about it, but let me make this clear to you: I will defeat Count Domallius and conquer all his forces whether you believe it or not.”

I turned to the prison guards by the gate, who came and shut the door of the sorceress’s cell behind me.
