CHAPTER 14
Washington, D.C. - The White House, Oval Office
Acting President Philip Cain sat behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office using all his considerable willpower to prevent himself from having a temper tantrum. What ought to have been one of the greatest triumphs of his life was turning into a joke.
It had been so easy to make his predecessor fall ill using that cocktail of exotic drugs. They were extremely hard to detect without an autopsy, but if Garner had died like heâd really wanted, an autopsy would have been performed. So heâd had to satisfy himself with merely putting the man into a permanent coma. But it didnât matter one way or the other, because the outcome was the sameâhe was in charge.
If that idiot, Commander Dutcher, had done what he was originally ordered to do, he would have already won the race and collected the prize. Everything would have been finished, and with none of the complications he was currently dealing with. Now, he was forced to compromise, which he loathed.
Just like almost everyone on the face of the Earth, he had watched Michael Freemanâs interview. It was such a contorted pack of lies and half-truths; he could not believe the temerity of the man! He had to grudgingly admit that his call to action was inspired, and he hated him even more because of it. That was the reason why almost every telephone line to the White House was busy. And he didnât even want to think about the massive protest outside the White House gates which had gathered and then quickly grown to alarming proportions in the past hour.
This was not how things were done, with everything exposed and out in the open. It made the insignificant masses believe they really were important and in control of their destinies.
The Joint Chiefs, members of the Senate, members of Congress, and even his own secretary, were all urging him to accept the invitation for a videoconference. That infernal man had managed to steer the passions of the entire world, something Philip Cain had thought impossible. And, after all that, he couldnât help but wonder, what was Mr. Freemanâs endgame? Oh, he realized that the man was playing one nation against the other, but what was he planning to get out of it all? It was disturbing to be the one in the dark.
So, now he was put on the spot and the barbarians were literally at his doors, demanding action. He wished that, like Nero, he could simply burn down this entire city and enjoy a glass of wine while he watched those annoying pests turn to ash.
He would have to accept this invitation, despite how much it infuriated him.
Damn Michael Freeman to hell!
