- Wilkins -

After their brief meeting with the Russian commander, Wilkins and the Captain were escorted under armed guard back to their cell. At least they were warmer now, and had their smokes, but there was little good to be said for their situation.

"Bastards," Banks said after a while in quiet smoking. "Fucking bastards."

Wilkins didn't know whether to reply, given their earlier admonishment about keeping schtum, but the Captain seemed past caring on that score.

"If you're worried about them listening in, don't be. Fuck them, their mothers and the horses they rode in on. We're getting out of here, lad, and they're going to regret they ever fucked with us."

"How did they get an operation this size all the way out here without anybody noticing?"

"Because they're sneaky bastards, that's how," Banks replied. "I'm guessing the signal jamming is coming from here, probably from yon trailer. I didn't get enough time with their equipment to find out, but they've got enough kit here to keep a small country running."

"You didn't get a message out?"

The Captain shook his head rather than reply.

"I didna get enough time. We're on our own. And we need to do something about it real soon. You heard the man…they're aiming to destroy our base completely. Our friends need us."

Saying it proved easier than doing anything about it though. There was no egress from the cell, and no sign of anyone coming to check on them.

Wilkins sniffed at the sealskin suit. It was worse now in the confines of the small room.

"Why would anybody want to train bears as an attack force? Isn't it all a bit medieval?"

"That's Russians for you," Banks said, but the Captain wasn't paying attention. Wilkins saw him looking at the ceiling.

"Could it really be that easy?" Banks muttered to himself.

Wilkins looked up, and didn't see what the Captain had noticed, until the officer raised his lighter and flicked it on. They could now see through the grille overhead. The Captain had placed the lighter under what looked like a sprinkler head.

"Best get your hood up, lad. If I'm right we're about to get a soaking."

Wilkins barely got time to raise his hood before a klaxon alarm kicked in at a deafening volume and a spray of water gushed from the sprinkler.

"Get ready, lad, they'll be coming," Banks said. "You take the left, I'll take the right."

"What if there's more than two of them?"

"Then this is a fucking stupid plan."

The lock clicked and the door swung open seconds later. Wilkins went through it in a waist high dive that would have made his old rugby coach proud, had just enough time to see an astonished gape on the face of the soldier standing directly in front of them, then they were both rolling on the compound floor. The element of surprise gave Wilkins the advantage; he rolled on top of the man, grabbed his opponent's head with both hands and slammed him back onto the ground with all the weight he could muster behind it.
