Tina read the final report that Lisa’s people had put together about Chris Calvert. It seemed that he was above board. The only thing questionable about him at all was the fact that he’d hedged on his taxes, which was a thing that she was more than willing to overlook, considering his experience.

According to the information she’d gotten from him during the extensive interview she’d conducted a few days ago, he’d served in many ways over his career with Confederation Intelligence. He’d been hired as an analyst, eventually moved to doing fieldwork as an operative, and had put in a significant amount of time as a recruiter. He hadn’t done anything with the technical services or any of the other support infrastructure, but that was a lot more mundane than the skills he brought to the table.

He was skeptical about how easily they’d be able to train people they selected to be spies, but he hadn’t been read into the project where they were using sleep-learning chips to teach a wide variety of skills. Both she and her husband had spent the last couple of days recording a series of chips on their specific skill sets. They weren’t done yet, but they were getting close. She imagined another few days would be sufficient to get everything they needed. Maybe three if things took longer than expected.

Once that was done, she’d be able to start seeing what Patrick had left for Lisa. She had to admit that she was champing at the bit to see what that added to her capabilities. Those weren’t the sort of things that entry-level operatives needed to know about, so she had to record her current skills before she learned anything new. If there was something specific that they could benefit from, they could record a one-off chip with just that skill.

She’d also get Chris to record the skills he had as a recruiter because they needed more than one. In fact, they would need a lot of them. They needed a number of people that weren’t coming straight from college. They had to spread their net wide and find people that wouldn’t stand out if they were inserted into the Confederation proper. That meant they needed folk that were potentially older and also had backgrounds that could be easily verified by the individuals that were no doubt watching for spies.

If someone was a known shoe salesman, no one would expect them to have a raft of spy skills. The Poseidon Group had no way to anticipate the sleep-learning machines, and she intended to use that against them ruthlessly.

While she certainly wasn’t looking to recruit elderly people, if the right person turned up with a background that was useful, she might be tempted. Not everyone would be involved in guerrilla warfare and black ops. Some people would simply live their lives in an occupied area and make clandestine reports about what they saw. In fact, the vast majority of people that they inserted into the Confederation proper would be doing that.
