We landed with a ‘thud’ sprawled out across the hardwood flooring in the center of our living room. This was the one and only time I’d wished we had carpet. Alex rolled over, springing to his feet and sprinted for the bathroom. I could hear him retching several times before the toilet flushed. Followed by the sink water running and the sounds of him brushing his teeth. And such a glorious sound it was.
He stormed out of the bathroom and straight over to me. The fury on his face was unlike any I’d ever seen. I scrambled to my feet before he unleashed his anger.
“What the fuck! What the everloving fuck just happened, Charlie? And why are we dressed like this?” He gestured to our archaic attire before balling his fists up at his sides, anxiously pacing before me, trying to get a grip on his rage.
“Let me explain, Alex. This,” I held up the watch, “is a time travel device. My father had been using it to travel back and forth to try and find a way to save my mother. Sadly, it drove him to the brink of insanity and his heart gave out before he found a way.” My saddened stature must have been enough to calm him, somewhat, as I firmly clutched my father’s watch to my chest before continuing. “When I figured out what it did, I started traveling back to get a glimpse of what my mother looked like. It bothered me that I couldn’t remember her face.”
“Oh, Charlie. You were so young when she died. But this isn’t normal. We have to get rid of that thing.” His hardened voice calmed with each passing syllable.
I stood there, staring at the watch in my hand. “This is where I’ve been going. Not cheating, not doing drugs.”
Alex gripped my shoulders, shaking me. “What the fuck do you want from me, Charlie? For one or both of us to die? I’m positive that the time travel alone was what killed your father, but his broken heart didn’t help matters either.”
Reluctantly, I agreed. “I know. I’ve also learned that after damn near losing you, that nothing is worth it. Not even the need to see my family again.”
Alex hugged me and as we parted, he held his hand out for the watch. “I’m going to put it somewhere safe until we can donate it to a museum or something. But one way or another, it’s leaving our hands.”
I handed the watch over. Hoping it didn’t lead to the or something portion of his statement. He was mad, and rightfully so. I’d risked our relationship and our lives. Nothing and no one was worth that.
“You know it’s for the best, Charlie. I’m sorry your family is gone, but your grandmother left behind multiple photo albums. You could have been looking at those for pictures of your mother for fuck’s sake. Now look at the mess you’ve made,” Alex cursed.
“I never thought of that.” Fuck, I’m such an idiot.
In typical stressed out Alex fashion, he ran his fingers through his hair.
