I’m not a breast man. I’m a breast person.—John Wilson

And a joke is still a fairly blunt instrument of communication. It’s functional, to the point; it requires very little emotional investment. In fact it often helps to conceal the degree of our personal involvement with a subject or situation. Horace Walpole wrote, “The world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.” Of course he wasn’t distinguishing between men and women: for people of either gender, telling jokes can be a good way of substituting thinking for feeling. Nevertheless, we can’t help feeling (and thinking) that “joke” is a fundamentally masculine noun.
