"Aunt Bev didn't believe you?" Audrey asked, shaking her head in contemplation. She and Emily finished going over talking points for Audrey's upcoming video, and now they sat on the couch, catching up on their days.
"She thinks Nick and I are faking a relationship," Emily said, popping a grape into her mouth and searching Audrey's face for a reaction. She had no choice but to tell her, knowing the Cobb women told each other everything. She needed to get ahead of the situation.
"I don't understand. She likes you and is obsessed with setting Nick up so he'll get over Madison... Shoot, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring her up."
"It's fine," Emily said, but harsh reality set in. Though she spent the last few days having fun with Nick, coming alive sexually, they didn't dive deep into conversations after. He could still be in love with Madison; he'd kept that part of things to himself.
"Does he ever bring Madison up to you?" Audrey asked as if she read her mind, and Emily shook her head.
"We've been busy keeping things casual. I didn't want to ask." The truth at least. She missed being honest and hated lying to Audrey. When her fake relationship with Nick ended, she would tell her everything. She couldn't hide it from her forever.
"He never talked about it much. Seems to me they wanted a divorce out of the blue, but it's not like I was a part of their relationship," Audrey said, munching on grapes as they both sat lost in thought. "He only ever said they drifted apart. You should ask him. He's coming over when he gets off work, right?"
Emily almost choked on a grape. "I can't ask him about his divorce! It's way too soon." And, of course, none of her business considering the true nature of their relationship.
"If anyone has the right to ask, it's you," Audrey argued.
"I'm surprised you care so much."
Audrey chuckled. "I have always been curious."
"Yeah?" Emily asked, thinking back to the days when Nick and Madison were a couple. Oof. Not a great feeling suddenly, in the pit of her stomach, as images of the two of them resurfaced in her mind. They had made a great pair, the dark-haired and slender Madison with the tall and toned Nick. Emily shook away the images of them together at various functions, arms wrapped around each other, talking…. kissing. "They were happy." The words slipped out, and Audrey gave her a reassuring smile.
"A long time ago, Em. He's with you now. I shouldn't have brought her up."
Emily shook her head. "If I'm going to date Nick, I need to accept his past. He and Madison were together for six years. They were together before I even met him, so I understand she will be mentioned. Bev even brought her up today and pointed out how different we are."
"Rude," Audrey said, and Emily laughed.
"But we can't deny the truth. I mean, physical appearance alone, and Madison is crazy smart."
"So are you!
