Fifteen

AS FAR AS DINNER DATES WENT, IT WASN’T ONE OF the better ones, Alex thought as he paid the bill. After the “bare our souls” moment in the truck, Cassie had been unnaturally subdued. God, he’d never considered her side of things, or how his frequent dismissive comments would’ve affected her. He’d figured he was in the right, she was in the wrong, and only the strong survived.

Now he couldn’t stop wondering about the workers she’d had to lay off, or if maybe her kid had had to go without something because she was out of money and it had been his fault.

For so long, he’d thought he had a grasp on what was right and wrong, what he was good at and what he wasn’t good at, what he wanted and what he didn’t want—now, none of it seemed as certain as when he’d started out.

Shit. He was too damn young for a midlife crisis.

Especially since spending time with Cassie was making him feel more like an oversexed seventeen-year-old than a mature thirty-seven-year-old.

All through dinner he’d watched her, trying to figure out what exactly made her so utterly sexy. Maybe he was simply attracted to cute, mouthy man-eaters, but it was more than that. She radiated a vitality and energy that he couldn’t ignore. He’d simply refused to let himself acknowledge it before now.

Maybe when this mess with Trixie the Wonder Baby was settled, he’d ask her out. Could be disastrous, could be fun…but he wanted to find out if all of her tasted as good as that first kiss.

He didn’t think any woman had ever fit his hands as well as she did, or roused such anticipation…God, the hunger and passion in that one little kiss had short-circuited all his rational thoughts. He couldn’t stop thinking about her or looking at her, although he tried not to be too obvious.

He’d also caught her looking at him throughout the day and during dinner, sometimes faintly puzzled, other times speculative. What was going through her mind right now when she cast him that quick, sideways glance as he pulled into the drive by her lab?

“Are you thinking of getting more work in?” he asked, half hoping she’d say yes because he wouldn’t mind spending a little more time alone with her, but also half hoping she’d say no so he had something to look forward to the next morning.

Amazing…when was the last time he’d really anticipated being with a woman? He couldn’t even remember—not something to be proud of, considering the number he’d slept with over the past few years.

Cassie hopped down from the truck, and he got out as well, walking around to meet her. He intended to stick around until he could be certain she was safe.

“No. I have to call my kid before he starts wondering if I’ve forgotten his existence.”

“Ah,” Alex said, feeling a twinge of disappointment. “Kids can be a real pain in the ass.”

“Hmph. You should try actually raising one. A more humbling experience, I can’t imagine.
